Data on film admissions included in the LUMIERE database
is generally compiled on a country-by-country basis.
One exception to this rule involves the province of Québec in
Canada for which we include a separate data series.
The inclusion of this distinct data series for Québec, provided
by the Observatoire de la culture et des communications, allows us to
reflect the specific nature of this French-language market and to provide
data based on admissions, rather than on box office revenues. It also
allows us to present a far greater level of detail for this market than
would otherwise be possible.
Since 2001 reporting by US trade magazine Variety on the North
American box office has systematically included results for the US, English-speaking
Canada and the province of Québec. Box office results for Québec
are provided to Variety by the Cineac
Cinema agency. These North American results are shown under the heading
US in LUMIERE and are converted to estimated admissions by means of an
average ticket price calculation. As the Variety listing covers
only the Top 250 films on release in North America in any one year, the
inclusion of a separate data series for Québec allows us to provide
a more detail for this market and to take advantage of the publication
of a series denominated in admissions, rather than in box office revenues.

Québec. The company also maintains a directory of cinemas and
of industry professionals for the province of Québec and provides

the press and major Internet portals, as well as for the principle trade
publications both in Canada and elsewhere.
Cineac reporting of box office results for films on release in Québec
is included in the overall North American grosses for films published
in Variety since 2001. The North American figures are included in the
